Gergana Zmiicharova

Gergana Zmiicharova has been working as a freelance artist and photographer since 2006. Within a period of seven years, Gergana studied Theatre Directing for two years at NATFA, graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Photography, and started a Master’s programme in Theatre at the New Bulgarian University, meanwhile taking part in a series of photographic and painting exhibitions, and receiving several awards. As recognition of her work, in 2009 she was awarded student with special contributions in the sphere of arts in the national Student of the Year competition under the patronage of the Minister of Education Dr. Sergey Ignatov. In 2010, Gergana’s work was nominated in the category Best Art Photography in the national photo-competition “Photo of the Year – Canon 2009” at the National Art Gallery, Sofia. Her first photographic exhibition – “The Borrowed Plot” – was shown in 2012 at the Algara Gallery in Sofia, as part of The Month of Photography. Just this last year, Gergana showed her first solo photographic exhibition; took part in the collective painting exhibition “The Choice” at Rakursi Gallery, next to artists like Andrej Daniel and Yavora Petrova; presented the “Evangelical Stories” exhibition at the Artamontsev Gallery, together with Petrinel Gochev. In the meantime, Gergana started working as an actress and had roles in eight productions at the Racho Stoyanov Drama Theatre in Gabrovo, the most successful of which is no other than ‘Romeo and Juliet’ – the production was selected for the prestigious theatre festivals “Stage on Crossroads” 2013 (Plovdiv) and “Fair of the Young” 2013 (Sofia). What is remarkable about Gergana Zmiicharova’s photographs is the influence of her interests in the field of visual arts and theatre. Her photo-paintings combine quotes from the great fine arts masterpieces with purely theatrical gestures and settings. Her works show remarkable culture and imagination, a sense of humour and pedantic attention to detail.
